Thomas & Friends: Digs and Discoveries Premiere Blog Report (6/7/2019)

Disclaimer: We were invited to see the preview as VIP guests (with the exception of 321Testify who went to see it at a later date) and the opinions expressed are entirely based from our own perspectives individually.

Here is my blog report on the latest instalment to the Thomas & Friends franchise ~ ‘Digs and Discoveries’, along with input from my friends who went to see it with me. This was especially written as a special thank you to Mattel and Thomas & Friends for inviting us to be one of the first people to see it!

After over 2 hours of transportation where my father dropped me off at around 10 AM, I thanked him for the lift, we bid our farewells until the end of the day for home, and I went to the Main Entrance where I was kindly given a special Thomas lanyard and explored Thomas Land to start things off.

One of the very first people I had happen to meet along the way was none other than Veronica Chambers ~ one of the Reverend Awdry’s daughters! She was really happy to see me as we both recalled our first encounter at Talyllyn back in 2011 during Duncan’s Days event. We both had our picture taken and had a brief yet pleasant chat before parting ways until the next time we met after some exploration.

Then I met Geoffrey who was also happy to see me for a brief time before he went off to find his mother, and I then wandered around the main part of Thomas Land and Sodor Airport where I rode James and the Red Balloon. It was fun from the start, but in the end ~ I did feel a little dizzy and needed a break!

By 11:20, I decided to leave Thomas Land for a while and went to see the entrance of the 4D cinema and to my amazement, I could see promotional banners of ‘Digs and Discoveries’ right above the building along with a few posters and a photo stand for attendants and VIP guests to have their picture taken.

Over half an hour later, after the second encounter with Geoffrey and his mother and had our pictures taken together, the doors opened as all the guests and competition winners went inside ~ just as the weather turned drizzly…! It was a good thing too, for I did not ever wear a jacket!

The cinema was already packed with lots of guests including myself and other select “super Thomas fans” who wrote their contributions to the blog report to learn more as well, along with Veronica Chambers, lots of families and children and most importantly ~ Ian McCue and his family too!

Before we were all called to the screening room, there was even a special room filled with latest Thomas Trackmaster sets being demonstrated like Thomas’ Dragon Escape set and Super Cruiser. Once we were all settled in our seats before Digs and Discoveries had started showing, Derek and Kemi performing their special Milkshake dances to the audience including some children who went to see and dance with them up close! After the special Thomas Milkshake dance move and the introduction from the Fat Controller, the two parter special started playing.

Now to simply put from my initial viewing experience, I had a lot of fun watching another Thomas Big World Adventure and it was a real joy seeing familiar classic characters, along with the introduction of new friends including my all new tie-in favourite characters ~ Lorenzo and Beppe!

I especially loved how the dream sequences were executed for some comedic effect, as well as how the message about curiosity gets the best of you if you are not being careful was thoroughly explored quite well too. The visuals and voice direction were also spot-on as an added bonus.

In all Digs and Discoveries was full of wonder, curiosity and fun for any Thomas fan to enjoy (and perhaps for a whole family), and that is one of the things I liked about Thomas & Friends based from my own perspective as a full grown adult who is still young at heart.

Spoiler free review aside, after the premiere event was over, we were all given a complimentary Thomas goodie bag to take home and at the end of the day, I was nonetheless tired after such an exciting event but overall thankful to have ever been invited to one of many Thomas related events that’s worth remembering.

Geoffrey
Another brilliant instalment to the Big World Big Adventures franchise and of course leaving us wanting more. Fantastic to meet new characters Lorenzo and Beppe. Seeing the famous Italian landmarks was great rather than just as background paintings. Thomas was at his best as always making new friends with Gina. We learnt about archeology and new vehicles like Stefano. Great music as always and fun to have a longer episode and bringing in favourite characters like Jack. Can’t wait to see the two accompanying Italian episodes. From Geoffrey

ellsworth
On June 28th 2019, I received an email from Mattel; it was an invitation for two tickets to the ‘Digs & Discoveries’ premiere at Drayton Manor. The following day, I began to decide who I would take to the premiere and after much consideration, I decided to choose MrMerlinFan02 because it would give him the opportunity to experience what a real film premiere would be like. After making a few arrangements with him, the big day (July 6th) finally came and rendezvoused at the entrance of Drayton Manor.

After having a great reunion with Ian McCue, Veronica Chambers (Rev Awdry’s daughter) and Sara Henson (Christopher Awdry’s niece), we all made our way into the main screen of the Drayton Manor Cinema. I won't go into detail, but I will say that the two 22-minute special episodes were really worth the watch and there’s so much excitement throughout the storylines. Italy really is fascinating in the two-part specials, it’s culture and environment is absolutely beautiful. The Italian characters stand out very well and all get perfect amount of screen-time, especially Gina, Lorenzo, Beppe and Stefano.

Another great improvement that was made here is that Thomas is not the only ‘Sodor’ character seen abroad as he is accompanied by Jack, Alfie, Oliver, Max & Monty and a new member of the Sodor Construction Company: Brenda. It was about time more Sodor characters were seen abroad as it really brings more story potential to have someone other than Thomas involved.

‘Digs & Discoveries’ may have had a few flaws in its path, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying every moment of the two special episodes. I really look forward to seeing more of these 22-minute episodes in the future! From Elliot Killick-Ward (Ellsworth).

MrMerlinFan02
On June 29th 2019, I was invited by Elliot Killick-Ward (ellsworth) to the “Digs & Discoveries” event at Drayton Manor. I agreed to it and started to get very excited about it, on July 6th I made my way to Drayton Manor and met up with Elliot. After meeting up, We met up with Ian McCue and Dan (SmurfyDan) and not forgetting Veronica Chambers (one of Wilbert Awdry’s daughters). After watching Dig & Discoveries, it really brought lots of surprises, meeting the new characters was great as well as seeing all the children enjoying themselves. It was a great pleasure being invited to this event and even getting TrackMaster 2 Lorenzo & Beppe, look forward to more of these events in the future!

321Testify (WARNING: May contain spoilers!)
On Friday the 12th of July, I headed up to Drayton Manor Theme Park to view one of the public screenings of Digs and Discoveries. This is the first time the new special format is being used. Just to clarify, both parts are twenty minutes long to make up a complete forty minute story. The new twenty minute special format felt like it was more effective in Mines of Mystery than in All Tracks Lead to Rome. All Tracks Lead to Rome was part one, and obviously there were plot threads and character arcs that needed to be established, but it still seemed like it was a little slow to start. This type of story works quite well with the format: it’s larger and longer than an ordinary episode, but doesn’t quite feel justified to have an hour long special dedicated to it, which was nice. In addition, both parts were formatted so they could be watched independently from one another, but still withhold a main story. In my opinion, BWBA felt like it could have benefitted from this segmented story format.

One of the things I was most eager about with this special was the inclusion of Gina. I had secretly been hoping that Gina would make a return in the series and when D&D was announced I was thrilled to hear it was set in Italy. But I was also a little worried she wouldn’t be characterised very well and that she would end up needing more development like other international engines such as Ashima or Tamika. I was relieved to see that she actually had an interesting personality, and she was fun to watch.

Lorenzo and Beppe were also a lot of fun; their stylised backstory was wonderfully executed, the enigma surrounding them was nice, their dynamic was very refreshing, and of course their personalities were wonderful. I look forward to seeing them in future stories.

Right from the start, Stefano had me a little worried. I mean, look at him. Upon first impressions, he doesn’t exactly feel like a Thomas character, and I understand why a lot of people dislike him. But I never found myself groaning whenever he was onscreen. But I feel like I need to see more of him to form a proper opinion.

I always get excited whenever The Pack are featured, they’re a fun cast of characters that are able to bring unique stories to Thomas & Friends, due to that fact that they are construction vehicles. Their inclusion in the Thomas’ universe doesn’t feel out of place, and I would argue that their inclusion in D&D fits in with one of the central themes (you’ll find out what that is when it comes out).

As for Brenda and Ester, there’s not much I can really say about them. Ester feels a little bland (and looks a bit odd too). Brenda’s inclusion in The Pack was obviously to diversify the gender divide in The Pack. Her body and paint scheme look the part but I think her face is a bit ugly. I’m a bit worried that Brenda may have also killed any chance for a character like Byron to ever return, now that the bulldozer role is taken. Poor Byron. Her personality seems nice but much like Stefano, I need to see more of her before I can form a proper opinion.

Something I didn’t really like about this special was how Thomas acted really immature - more so than usual. I get that Thomas is supposed to be a child and is curious to learn about the world around him, but some of his actions are unbelievably silly. We’ve seen Thomas going through these motions before. Thomas constantly envying everyone else for doing things he can’t do is getting a little old. I understand that his actions are supposed to play into the themes of the special, but I feel as if it could have been executed better.

I was also a little disappointed by how under-utilised The Pack were. I know that this isn’t their story, but I was rather hoping they would have more screen time seeing as they play a role in it.

Another thing I noticed were small railway inconsistencies, where engines could choose which track they were going on independently, and other times where points were manually changed by a Driver. Not something to really complain about, but something I thought might be worth mentioning.

Overall, I thought Digs and Discoveries was fun, Becky Overton did a good job here. I wouldn’t say I enjoyed it as much as some of the other specials, but I’d still recommend giving it at least one watch despite its problems.

#ThrowbackThursday - The Awdry Centenary Special (18/6/2011)

On Saturday June 18th, 2011, the day before Father’s Day, I went on a special trip to the Talyllyn Railway in Northern Wales with my dad for a train ride along the lovely little line. It was a lovely afternoon by the time we arrived at Tywyn station to book our tickets, but it was decided that we both explored the station and museums first.

I even got to explore the gift shop in Tywyn filled with classic Thomas books and toys that were on the shelves among many Railway related items, and even had a picture taken next to one of the narrow gauge mining engines in the museum. As we explored the place from upstairs, I had a chance to explore the special centenary exhibition in honour of the late Reverend Wilbert Vere Awdry (1911 - 1997). The cabinets and green boards filled with Wilbert’s possessions, the Railway Series books in which he was the writer and author, and some archival photographs during his lifetime.

During some exploration while filming, I had a brief chat with some lovely railway staff about the legacy of Wilbert Awdry, the centenary celebration and how I met his son Christopher in person a few times. I then decided to film the Awdry Study place which was another one of the highlights of the trip from my perspectives.

Shortly after, my father and I went out to take a train ride from 1:50 PM along the line with Edward Thomas (who inspired Awdry to create ‘Peter Sam’ based on the particular engine) taking us to Nant Gwernol and back. Along the way, we passed Tom Rolt and stopped at a crossing next to the locomotive sheds for a couple of minutes before the train can move again.

In the middle of our train journey after passing many beautiful countrysides and fields filled with cows and sheep, in which my father remarked that it was like the countryside in ‘The Lord of the Rings’, I met Veronica Chambers at Abergynolwyn station (where Sir Handel and Rusty were around during the time) and we both had a brief yet pleasant chat about her father before I headed back into the train onward to our final stop at Nant Gwernol.

By the time we arrived, Peter Sam was uncoupled and changed tracks for the return journey to Tywyn, while I filmed some shots of the rushing rivers, waterfalls and a steep hill that was used to be an incline. However it was decided for a short stroll along the rivers of Dolgoch Falls and explored the caves.

After some additional exploration on our little railway adventure, my father and I took another train (pulled by Tom Rolt) back to Tywyn and went safely home by car for some well earned rest after a long journey.

The History of Thomas & Friends - A Blog Report by SmurfyDan

On the cloudy morning of Saturday May 18th, my father drove up to the car park of the Midland Railway - Butterley station where I was dropped out of the car and bought the train ticket to Swanwick. There I met Lewis the Racoon inside the train where he showed off his replica gauge 1 van with a laughing face on!

As we had a short train journey to Swanwick, we walked outside the station to our destination ~ even though it was initially going to be inside the church, now moved to the cafe place for there was enough room to see the ultimate Thomas exhibition display!

To my surprise, there was a lot to explore throughout the exhibition display tables but my personal highlights are looking through folders of character models, behind the scenes pictures from Series 5 and Thomas & The Magic Railroad and Bob Gauld Galliers’ Series 4 storyboards, Owein Bell’s artwork of Edward, Gordon, Henry and the Fat Controller, original manuscripts of The Three Railway Engines and most importantly ~ seeing Rocky, TFC, rolling stock and lots of unique and authentic TV series props.

There was even a display table dedicated to the Mr. Perkins segments which filled with books, oil portraits of The Fat Controller and Thomas and the late Ben Forster’s engine driver outfit. There was even a Thomas table for children to play with toys and watching Thomas DVDs on a television set, and there was even a huge Thomas statue waiting to welcome the visitors, as they enter the station cafe.

During my stay at the exhibition throughout the weekend, I met some familiar faces like TEngine, Terrier55Stepney, sparkshot and CraneProductions27 who bought in a special victoria sponge cake he made with red icing letters ‘THOMAS & FRIENDS’ written on it. He showed the cake to everyone and it looked terrific and scrumptious. It had been a pleasure meeting new faces as well and I even had a photograph taken next to one of fellow Thomas fans on Twitter.

I even got around with some great friends for a group photo which was really nice, and before I left earlier at 3 PM on Sunday with my father for the journey home due to traffic, Ross offered me a slice of his lovely cake which tasted delicious, and I even left a quotation of the Fat Controller saying ‘Well D’jun!’ (in which Michael Angelis used his Yorkshire accent for the character that was very well known) as a feedback to sum up my experience.

Overall I have had a terrific time exploring different exhibition tables from props and pictures to merchandise like books, toys and artworks. The exhibitors were pleasant to engage a conversation and were very helpful on answering questions and offering advices. They had all done an excellent job making visitors happy both young and old.

One more year and we will all be having a real celebration for the legacy of Awdry and Thomas.

A Bigg Celebration - 30 Years of TUGS (10/11/2018)

On Saturday November 10th, 2018, the weather was quite breezy yet sunny as I went out of Premier Inn hotel near Derby City Centre to the bus stop en route to Ripley, and as I waited for the bus, ellsworth arrived and it wasn't long until we both got in one of the Nines bus. This was where the fun began.

When we arrived at the Midland Railway Centre in Butterley, ellsworth and myself then met one of his college classmates who was filming for a 10 minute documentary project. Then I went into the station and booked my ticket before taking the 1100 train, where Parker Productions later joined me, and then ellsworth and his classmate arrived too. The ride was worth it and we all talked like great friends. The train stopped at Swanwick Junction on its way back for ten minutes, where me and Parker Productions got off to take a plenty of pictures of the station, its surroundings and the engines before getting back to our train en route to Butterley.

Once we all made it back to Butterley by 11:50 AM, we went into the station cafe where we see all our friends including Charlie and Richard celebrating the special occasion ~ the 30th year anniversary of TUGS, a short lived children's TV show devised by Robert D. Cardona and David Mitton, the director of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends up to 2003 (now called Thomas & Friends). It wasn't long before CraneProductions27 and StarbugProductions arrived at the cafe and we all reunited ~ after four and a half years since we previously met at the Andercon event near Heathrow on Saturday April 19th, 2014.

As 12:30 PM drew near, ellsworth, Lew the Racoon and I amongst other people were called to make our way to the exhibition coach with Chris Eden-Green (the creator and presenter of 'Steam Locos in Profile' with his camera), Sean and Sam. When all was ready and the doors were opened, there was the Duchess model (now called 'S.S. Roxstar' in Thomas & Friends as a set decoration for Brendam Docks scenes) sitting proudly on the table at the centre of the coach - much to our bewilderment and surprise!

The Duchess model looked so humongous in size and height, and even some minor prop detail to it were intriguing to look at and I took plenty of photos including some of my replica wooden Thomas toy models (created for me by Whitehousefilms) standing next to the Duchess herself!

Here is the interesting fact about the Duchess model: During the production of TUGS nearing the late 80's, a model maker in Germany built a large ocean liner named 'The Duchess' that appeared in the first episode titled 'Sunshine'. After the liner ship was made, it was transported to Shepperton Studios by van. Following the production of 'Sunshine', the exact liner ship was then repainted and renamed to 'Princess Alice' in 'High Winds' and then 'S.S. Vienna' in 'Bigg Freeze'. Following the cancellation of TUGS, the liner ship occasionally appeared in Thomas & Friends episodes and specials under the name 'S.S. Roxstar' to this very day.

An hour later after exploring the coach, we headed back to the cafe for some lunch, watching TUGS episodes on television and provided more fun at the party. SkarloeyFan showed me his collection book filled with vintage Thomas postcards and stamps including ones featuring still images from the television series, and he then took out a board game of TUGs as he played with our friends. Next there was modellers galore with Lew's Puffa model, Terrier55Stepney and Harry Fenchurch's Star Fleet models and their recreation of 'San Juan Bananas' building, and finally a complete set of the original Awdry Thomas wooden toy replicas by Whitehousefilms for me (where I sneakily stuck Gordon's angry face to the front of wooden Thomas toy for good measure!).

As the evening drew in, the event ended with a chocolate birthday cake and we all had a slice each. It tasted delicious. I bought two Christmas baubles of Zorran and Warrior along with Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie DVD from the TUGS merchandising sales. You can watch my spoiler-free preview of the new Thomas DVD movie here.
https://youtu.be/djUzvkSELCg

As we all left the party for home and bid our goodbyes as the day turned to night, Parker Productions, ellsworth, James Jorden and I all caught the bus back to Derby and all discussed about the day's events during the journey. As we finally reached Derby and got off the bus, we all bid our farewells as Parker Productions went to go back to the train station on a homeward journey, James went back to his hotel and ellsworth and I both headed back to the Premiere Inn hotel for some rest. The following day I left the hotel earlier to catch the train back to London as there were engineering works on the usual route from Derby. The journey was longer than expected on alternative routes, but I made it back home safe and sound.

Overall it certainly was a day for surprises and I have had a terrific time with lots of wonderful friends ~ old and new. Seeing the Duchess model in person was the real highlight of the day as well as the birthday celebration at the station cafe in Butterley. A bigg thank you goes to the Star Tugs team for setting up a very special occasion for Thomas and TUGS fans to celebrate, and for making 2018 worthwhile for many of my trips.

#ThrowbackThursday - Thomas & Friends Christmas Journey in London (10/11/2013)

For a special #throwbackthursday as Christmas is drawing near, I have decided to bring up my perspective blog report on the Thomas Christmas Journey event that took place at London's Hamley's store five years ago.

On Sunday November 10, 2013, I left home around 10:30 AM to catch a tube from Northern Line to Leicester Square. However when I got there, it was closed for the weekend for bus replacement services. So I took the alternative route by taking a bus to Wimbledon and catch a 1130 train from there to the exact place.

By the time I have arrived at Hamley, I was about twenty minutes late after the event had started at 12:00 PM. Although it wouldn't bother me one bit, as we all knew that better late than never. First I went up to the second floor where the meet and greet of the Fat Controller (Sir Topham Hatt) took place.

(This is a picture of me with the Fat Controller and his trusty helper, Dusty)

There I gave the Fat Controller a warm, friendly handshake and introduced myself as well. And soon we had our picture taken, and shortly after that, I had met some nice people from HiT Entertainment / Mattel Creations and gave a compliment on how fabulous the event had been for everyone, especially to make the children smile.

Sometime later I went back upstairs to see the Fat Controller reading a festive storybook from My Thomas Story Library. (which was The Snowy Surprise) And I must tell you, he had done an outstanding performance as a storyteller for all the children!

(The Fat Controller's outstanding storytelling at Hamley's!)
After the storytelling was over, the Fat Controller asks the audience about who has a favourite Thomas story before he would leave to do more meet and greet routine, and I have answered a question. (which was obvious, as I enjoyed King of the Railway as the story overall)

Shortly after that, I went to look around the store before I had left to get home early. Overall this had been a really fun and fabulous event it had been, as I had said before. So all I have left to say is to give my personal thanks to the staff from HiT Entertainment / Mattel, Hamley's and the Fat Controller for making it all possible, and I would certainly hope all went well for their "Tracks  4 Thomas" journey to deliver presents to all the children in hospitals.

Thomas & Friends Big World! Big Adventures! BAFTA Premiere (1/9/2018)

It all started in the lovely sunny afternoon of Saturday, September 1st, 2018 in Central London, England where I took the train and underground tubes to Piccadilly Circus for the meeting with good friends ellsworth and Parker Productions. (I wore the blue shirt to best suit the occasion by the way!)

Later, the three of us went inside the luscious building of BAFTA. We went up to the reception floor upstairs where we met two Milkshake! presenters Kemi Majeks and Jen Pringle. Next, we all went to the second floor where other 'super fans' met us including SteamandWhistleProductions, 321Testify, Mr.MerlinFan02 and Geoffrey and his mother. It was decided that ellsworth, Parker Productions and myself took a selfie picture in front of the Thomas poster.

As we all discussed about general Thomas stuff, Ian McCue arrived with his family and was really chuffed to see all of us including SteamandWhistleProductions, ellsworth and myself whom he knew really well for many years. We all had a nice brief encounter as Ian and his family went to find some place to relax after their journey.

Later when the bell rang, it was time for everyone to enter Princess Anne Theatre, a 227-seat theatre established for cinema experience in the heart of London. The special presentation started with a Q&A session with the Fat Controller, who dons his Big World! Big Adventures! clothing style as worn before in the London cinema premiere on Saturday July 7th, 2018.

After the screening of the first two batch of four Series 22 episodes (‘Number One Engine’ and ‘Forever and Ever’), Kemi, Jen and the Fat Controller performed the Milkshake dance moves including the special one where everyone came up on stage including Parker Productions, Ian and myself all performed! It was crazy but a lot of fun. Still worth it for any Milkshakers who'd love to bop out and dance to any of their special moves mind you.

This was followed by two remaining episodes (‘What Rebecca Does’ and ‘Banjo and the Bushfire’) and the presentation was still a fun experience. At the end, everyone went to have their picture taken in front of the presentation with the Fat Controller, so we all decided to have one ourselves to bookmark an event to remember with Ian himself tagged along!

Minutes later we all had another group photo taken in front of the Thomas poster alongside Kemi, Jen and the Fat Controller. In the end, we all thanked Kemi, Jen and everyone else for the special Thomas BAFTA presentation before departing to Hamley's.

Along the way, we walked past the big yellow bus and joked about it while discussing about one of the new Steam Team members hence the yellow livery (you’d get the idea!). Once we have arrived at Hamley’s, we’ve spent a very good half hour or so looking at some Thomas merchandise including Adventures, Hornby and of course Wood, before part ways and bid our farewells. It all goes down to me, ellsworth and Parker Productions on our own as we walked out of Hamley’s, and went back to Piccadilly Circus as we finally part ways, bid our goodbyes and went home. It was one of the greatest highlights I have had for the year of 2018, especially with fun select episodes of Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures!

Special thank you to everyone for the fun presentation including Ian, Kemi, Jen and the Fat Controller too! As the little blue engine would say these days “All aboard for a big adventure!”

Geoffery’s Mum
The new series considers and respects all aspects of diverse societies around the world without losing the traditions of the Thomas & Friends characters everyone loves. It is colourful, fast paced and very funny. It is fun for all ages and not just for preschoolers. The new theme songs are very catchy. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Parker Productions
I was lucky to be given an invitation to attend the BAFTA event (massive thanks to Jen Pringle for arranging it all) to watch these brand new episodes - and it was amazing!  It was fab being with good companions (SmurfyDan and ellsworth) as well as meeting some new ones. Also, it was fantastic seeing the two veteran Milkshake! presenters briefly. I would have loved to have catched up some more, however I knew they had a job to do and didn’t have the time so it didn’t bother me that much. I’m sure there will be a next time!

After some selfie-taking with a certain tank engine and some banter, I saw a man walk up the stairs with his family and SmurfyDan and ellsworth walking towards him with enthusiasm.  I was flabbergasted to see it was Ian McCue himself! I had no idea he was going to be present! After composing myself, it was finally time for the show to begin. SmurfyDan, ellsworth, SteamandWhistleProductions, 321Testify and Mr.MerlinFan02 finally entered the theatre and sat in these really comfortable seats.  What was most interesting was they had these placards on the back displaying who had donated to the BAFTA. Notable celebrities included Julie Andrews, John Barry etc. with the words “Endowed by..” preceding it. I was curious to know which star donated my seat I was in... But maybe I’ll leave that till last, eh?

In front of us, a massive Thomas promo filled the theatre screen. Jen and Kemi jumped onto stage and addressed the excited audience in pure Milkshake fashion, with Kemi wearing an impressive ‘Who’s Number 1?’ top for the occasion!  It wasn’t just the duo who went all out in the fashion department; after the Fat Controller was welcomed onto the stage, he bore his tropical attire as seen in the episode ‘Ryan & Daisy’. (For those curious, it’s the same Fat Controller was at The Great Discovery, Hero of the Rails and other Leicester Square premieres). Very jolly and cheerful, the Fat Controller answered a few questions from the audience about Sodor and his travels across the world, before making way for the first episode of the long-awaited Series 22 to begin.

They played two episodes before an interval where Jen and Kemi got all the children (especially the mums and dads!) to stand up and dance to a few familiar Milkshake! song routines and then perform a new set of moves to the new TV series theme tune - it was a whole lot of fun! Even the Senior Producer of the show joined in! Making us weary was perfect to sit down and watch the next couple of episodes they showed us. Before we knew it, the event had arrived at the terminus. Jen and Kemi gave thanks to Mattel for helping to make the event possible and gave them a round of applause - only us fans knew to turn round to clap Ian at the back..!

As all of us got up, I went to check at the back of my seat to see the celebrity endowment and I couldn’t believe my eyes - “Endowed by Ringo Starr”! Talk about an omen!  That made me very happy, enlightened by the fact I had been watching brand new Thomas The Tank Engine episodes sitting in a seat honoured by the most famous storyteller of them all!

The rest of the day went really well, got to speak to Ian and discuss our opinions on what we’d seen. Capping it off, we had a group photo of all of us - SmurfyDan, ellsworth, Ian McCue, the Fat Controller, SteamandWhistleProductions, 321Testify and Mr.MerlinFan02.

After leaving BAFTA, Hamleys was the last stop on our list.  As fans, we talked and laughed, getting to know each other, before it was then time to go home.  The whole day certainly became one of the memorable moments of 2018 for me. Everyone had a smashing time. And spending it with good friends, what could be better?

Huge thanks again to Jen, Kemi, Ian and the rest at Mattel/HiT Entertainment and BAFTA for putting on such a Thomas-tastic event for children, parents and the fans. Keep being awesome!

~ Parker Productions

SteamandWhistleProductions
Would never think I would have the opportunity to go to a Thomas Series Preview! Especially at BAFTA! Felt like our own little premiere! The BAFTA building was amazing turning up it just looked like a door! It had a lovely theatre which was brilliant to show the episodes at their best on the big screen! Was great meeting SmurfyDan, Ellsworth, Parker Productions, 321testify and the rest! Was fantastic seeing Ian McCue again who I had met at the previous event, in which he came over and spoke to us before and after the event and had a picture taken with us all, I wonder how many executive producers of any film or tv series does that for their fans!  Also seeing and meeting the TFC and the presenters from milkshake was brilliant! The episodes that were previewed gave a great insight into what the series was going to be like, I really enjoyed the episodes and can’t wait to see the rest of the series! The animation, the new characters, storylines all fantastic, and it’s great that they are teaching kids all these important parts of life languages, morals, cultures which are taught at most schools. Yes it is quite a large change to what it was before, but seeing Thomas going round the world is brilliant and opens up so many opportunities. An event I will never forget, was very memorable, was brilliant seeing everyone there and I hope I can be part of more events like this in the future!

WOW, JUST WOW! I can’t believe that I had the opportunity to go to London to see the Exclusive Preview of Thomas & Friends Season 22!!! It all started when I arrived in London and went up to get my ticket for the preview. After having some lunch, I walked up the stairs in BAFTA to find SmurfyDan, Elliot Killick-Ward, 321Testify, SteamandWhistleProductions and Parker Productions waiting in the cafe. I was so happy to meet these guys and we had a great introduction by showing off some Thomas merchandise like ERTL, Adventures and Tomy.

Then IAN MCCUE ARRIVED! I couldn’t believe it, I was so honoured to meet him and Sir Topham Hatt himself!!! We entered the room and just out of the blue, Jamie (Parker Productions) was sitting in Sir Ringo Starr’s seat! The Milkshake presenters came on and we did a few dance moves seen on television. In my opinion I really enjoyed doing that, and at last the episodes began and I really enjoyed all of them. If I had to choose a favourite, it would be ‘Forever and Ever’ because I can relate to Gordon with not coping with new changes.

But the highlight of the preview was Daniel and Jamie (Parker Productions) dancing on stage with everyone and myself and the others were laughing so much!!! (Sorry Dan and Jamie XD) We finally got a picture with Ian, Sir Topham Hatt and all of us on stage in front of the screen.

After the preview, we left BAFTA and headed off to Hamleys to take a look at the Thomas merch. We found that Timothy was the last remaining Wooden Railway item on the shelves and we started to get to know each other properly, and we all laughed and chatted so much that it was fun to visit Hamleys. Then sadly, it was time for me to bid farewell to the guys as I would catch the train back home.

This was an experience I will never forget, seeing everyone and making new friends really made my day and meeting people who make the Thomas series itself! I hope we can do more in the future and Thank you to Dan, Jamie (both of them), Elliot, Luke and Ian for making my day and the start of September 2018 very memorable!

Where in the world do I even begin? About a week before the screening took place, I was scrolling through Twitter when I saw that SteamandWhistleProductions was visiting this event. I was intrigued, normally Thomas & Friends screenings weren’t made available to the public, as far as I could tell it’s usually by invite only. I quickly realised that an opportunity like this doesn’t pass by too often so I jumped at the first chance I got. Tickets were pretty cheap, £5 for the event. Not bad.

Admittedly, I was a little nervous about attending. Think of it this way, I’m still quite small and relatively unheard of amongst the community, this was my first meetup with anybody from the fandom and I was keen to make a good first impression. Not to mention this was my first time going into London by myself. Needless to say, the trip went very smoothly and I arrived at Piccadilly Circus in good time, BAFTA was just down the street. As I was nearing my destination, I was trying to match locations on my map to their real world counterparts, just to get an idea as to how close I was. I was so busy trying to match up the shops, that I almost walked right past BAFTA! I looked around to see a small entrance directly in front of me, I was a little taken aback, I almost missed it! Also standing outside the building was Jamie (SteamandWhistleProductions), sporting a wonderful Edward badge.

After our introductions the doors seemed to magically open by themselves, we walked inside, climbed up a short flight of stairs, collected our tickets and after another short flight of stairs we had finally arrived… an hour early… no biggie. We took this time to get to know each other more before the others arrived. I was then introduced to Mr.MerlinFan02, Parker Productions, SmurfyDan, ellsworth and Geoffrey. It was an absolute delight to meet them all but it was also very relieving to know that I was accepted as “one of them” in a way. As I brought out my trains, so did the others. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before, a very surreal experience. The wonderful thing about meeting “superfans” is that they retain almost the exact same information that you know, meaning that you could reference an oddity within your shared interest and they would understand exactly what you’re talking about, it’s brilliant! Perfect for in jokes. As we were getting to know each other better, who else should walk in but Ian McCue himself, I was in the presence of Thomas royalty, a real honour to meet.

At last the time had come, we were soon welcomed into the auditorium. But before we were seated we were told by Ian to “behave”, we all laughed before sitting down. Before the episodes began there was also a Q&A session with The Fat Controller; according to him, Harold had just landed on the roof after flying him in from China! After the first two episodes had been shown, it was time for a quick dance break with the Milkshake! Presenters. Some were more keen than others to participate *cough cough* Elliot *cough cough*. Probably the highlight of my day was seeing Daniel and Jamie Parker dancing on stage with Ian McCue and I have video evidence to prove it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZsdNUvvT5I

After the other two episodes had finished we had a very interesting/insightful chat with Ian before having our picture taken with The Fat Controller and the Milkshake! Presenters. At this point, Callum (Mr.MerlinFan02) suggested we went to Hamleys for a bit as it was close by. We realised we still had enough time before we were due to leave so how could we possibly resist? We laughed and joked for as long as we could before it was time to go, I was the first to leave. I was a bit conscientious of time, as I still had to walk back to Piccadilly Circus, take the Underground to King’s Cross to catch my train on time. We said our goodbyes and I headed for home.

For almost the entire journey home I couldn’t stop myself from grinning. The experience was incredibly fun and I would gladly encourage any Thomas fan to try it should the opportunity come again. I will certainly remember this trip for a very long time to come.

I was absolutely shocked when I was told by my good friend, SmurfyDan, that BAFTA would be hosting a special sneak preview of some of the new episodes for Series 22 and we both agreed that we and many other Thomas fans could not miss this event. Thankfully, on the day the tickets would go on public sale, I managed to get a few for me, SmurfyDan and my other good friend; Parker Productions.

Before I knew it, Saturday, September 1st finally arrived and I was on route to London Marylebone, where I met Parker Productions on the same train I was travelling. After a long journey, we both made to Marylebone and got the London Underground to Piccadilly Circus. There, we met up with SmurfyDan at the statues and walked down Piccadilly Circus to find BAFTA. After looking left and right at all times, we finally found the entrance, which was a small, narrow brown door with BAFTA on top of it, along with the famous theatre masks insignia. We were about to press the ‘CALL’ button when suddenly, the doors automatically opened up for us. We noticed a CCTV camera above us, so we assumed that, whoever was operating it, must’ve been expecting us.

Once inside, we met and got introduced to three new Thomas fans: SteamandWhistleProductions, MrMerlinFan02 and 321Testify. SmurfyDan and I were also reunited with a lad called; Geoffrey, along with his mother. Parker Productions was also reunited with two of the Milkshake! Presenters and Ian McCue himself showed up with his family. This was a big shock as we weren't expecting him to show up, but all the same, SmurfyDan and I had a lovely reunion with the man.

Before long, we were all called into BAFTA’s auditorium and I have to say, it looked so grand inside there and many A-list celebrities’ names were engraved on the back of certain seats including; Blake Edwards (Pink Panther), Judi Dench, John Barry (the original ‘Magic Railroad’ music composer) Aardman Animations, Kenneth Williams and even Thomas’s first narrator; Ringo Starr was labeled (Parker Productions was actually sitting in his seat).

After we all took our seats, the Milkshake! Presenters arrived on stage and greeted everyone, who were attending this event, and introduced us to the event, including the Fat Controller (in his Hawaiian shirt from the Big World! Big Adventures! The Movie Leicester Square Premiere) and some a special Milkshake! Dance that will be introduced officially when Series 22 aired on TV. While the audience were told to dance along for the fun of it, I secretly sat down (as I’m not really a dancer) and told the guys that “I’m calling in sick,” which they found very funny. This went on at least 4 times before we were shown the first 2 episodes which were; ‘Number One Engine’ and ‘Forever and Ever’ (the latter I really enjoyed due to it being focused on the ‘Autism Spectrum’ - a disability which I actually have).

After watching the first two episodes, the Milkshake! Presenters and the Fat Controller began to reveal something else - a sneak peak of the new ‘Big World! Big Adventures!’ Dance for the Milkshake! Channel. Many children volunteered to come up onstage to perform the dance with the presenters, even Parker Productions and SmurfyDan volunteered too. While me, Mr.MerlinFan02, 321Testify and SteamandWhistleProductions remained in our seats, we looked on in shock (in a humorous way) that Ian McCue had also volunteered to perform the dance onstage too! Next thing we knew, 321Testify had pulled out his phone and began to film the whole sequence and while they performed, we couldn’t help but have non-stop laughing fits, along with me telling 321Testify; “Keep rolling, this is priceless!”

After that was done, everyone returned to their seats when the Milkshake! Presenters enquired the Fat Controller on which other 2 episodes would be shown and to answer that question, they were: ‘What Rebecca Does’ and ‘Banjo and the Bushfire.’ After those two episodes were shown, we all met up with Ian McCue again and had a great chat with him, got our photos (including group photos) taken with him, the Fat Controller and the Milkshake! Presenters. The Fat Controller actually remembered me because I have met him at many of the Leicester Square premieres since 2008 (‘The Great Discovery’).

Then, all too soon, it was time for the event to end. But we did manage to have an hour at the famous Hamleys toy store where we went to explore both the ‘Thomas & Friends’ merchandise section and the ‘Hornby Railways’ section too. After our exploring in Hamleys was finished, it was time for all 6 of us ‘super fans’ to part ways and head back to our respective hometowns. Yes, I was sad that this “big adventure” had come to an end, but I enjoyed every moment of it and it was all worth it in the end. I’m sure they’ll be more special Thomas events in the future and when there is, I’ll be looking forward to those too.
